The band Spandau Ballet released the single “True” on 15 April 1983. It was written by guitarist Gary Kemp to express his feelings for Clare Grogan. It was influenced by the music of Al Green and Marvin Gaye. The song also drew influence from the film Let It Be, which featured the Beatles.
“True” spent four weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart and reached the top 10 in several countries. In the US, it became the band’s first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Kemp said the song influenced his future material and that other band members would compare their own material with it.
